Jill hadnât moved from the table when Max pushed through the back door. The human followed close behind.
âI told her she didnât need to bring me here, I can go anywhere in the city undetected,â the human said as soon as she was in the door. A curt smile spread across the womanâs face. âIâm sorry, that was rude. Iâm Forsythia. Sy for short.â
âYes, we talked.â
âRight.â Sy wiped her brow. âWell. Thank you for allowing me in your home.â
âHâve got some supplies if youâre hungry. Things we keep on hand for Arista,â Jill stood and opened the pantry door. Max moved into the living room.
âThat would be nice, yes. I havenât eaten since yesterday.â
Jill grabbed a few pieces of bread and some fruit from the refrigerator. âYou were at the gate all night?â
Sy nodded, taking a seat across from the one Jill had vacated. âI needed time to work on the gate. And to prepare Aristaâs new hand. I manufactured it on site, though I already knew I would need it. I brought the base with me and made the measurements the other night.â
âBut you didnâ tell her,â she said softly.
âI wanted it to be a surprise,â Sy said, flattening her own hands on the table and drawing them across the lacquer of the table.
âHowâd you know?â Jill smashed some nuts with a pestle, working quick to turn them into a butter.
Sy looked up. âFrom the initial Cadre reports when they first picked her up. We were monitoring then too. They said a human had been discovered after burning off her own appendage. Then things happened so fast.â
Rock music blared from the other room.
âMax! Turn that down, itâs the middle of the night!â The music volume decreased. Jill looked over at Sy. âShe likes music.â
âI think thatâs fascinating. All of you. I find you all fascinating.â
âYouâll excuse us if we seem a little paranoid. Weâre not used to dealinâ with humans.â Jill pulled the fruit over and whisked it into a chunky jam. She spread the jam on one piece of bread and the jelly on the other.
âItâs understandable. We didnât do the best job the last time around. Weâre trying to be better. Just like you.â
Jill slid the sandwich over to her. âArista likes these. Hope you like it too.â
âYes, thank you very much.â Sy finished the sandwich in six bites. âDelicious.â
âAristaâs room is the only one with a bed if you want it. The rest of us stay down here.â
âThat sounds great. I think Iâll head up now; Iâm beat. Youâll let me know if you hear from either of them?â
Jill nodded. âYep.â
Sy beamed. âThank you again for your hospitality. I will see you in the morning.â
Once she was upstairs Jill pulled Max into the kitchen. âAnythinâ?â she asked.
âOther than an obsession with the other one you mean?â
Jill glowered. âAnythinâ weird, I mean.â
Max looked up to the ceiling. Aristaâs room was on the back side of the house, not directly above them. âSheâs hiding something. I donât know what.
